Cowboy Stampede Rodeo

The OSU Rodeo Team and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University are proud to announce the third annual Cowboy Stampede rodeo, Oct. 20-22.

The OSU Rodeo Team is a long-standing tradition. In fact, they just celebrated their 70th anniversary. Although the team itself has been around for seven decades, the Cowboy Stampede rodeo has not. In just its third year, the Cowboy Stampede, a National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeo, brought more than 500 competitors representing 18 different colleges to Stillwater for the three-day event. The OSU Rodeo Team and College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources hosted the event October 20-22, 2016, which was the kick off to OSU’s Homecoming celebration.

“This year was special to us because we were given the opportunity to tie both long-standing traditions of OSU Rodeo and Homecoming together as one,” said Cody Hollingsworth, program coordinator and head coach.

Special guests at the 2016 Cowboy Stampede included OSU President Burns Hargis and First Cowgirl, Ann; DASNR vice president Tom Coon and his wife, Rhonda; Pistol Pete; the 2016 Homecoming Royalty Court; and the 2016 Homecoming Executive Team.

While the OSU Rodeo team is housed within CASNR, participation is open to students from any major. Most of the colleges on campus are represented on the team which creates a unique collaboration amongst teammates.

“We are proud of the effort our students put into their OSU experience, both inside and outside of the arena,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean. “Our team members are routinely recognized as Dean and President’s Honor Roll recipients, top freshman, seniors of significance, outstanding seniors and NIRA All-Americans.”

Hosting the Cowboy Stampede has been an opportunity to take the program to the next level and recognize the talents of the men and women on the team.

“The Rodeo Team is an important part of our heritage at Oklahoma State,” said Clary. “We are the home of the Cowboys; getting to celebrate our history and the success of the program at the Cowboy Stampede has been so rewarding. The students have built an event that goes beyond just the team or the college. They have re-established the tradition of a rodeo at OSU that the campus and the community can enjoy.”

In addition to the support CASNR provides to the team, a portion of funding for travel expenses and equipment comes from fundraising efforts of the rodeo club and at times, from competitors themselves.

“The rodeo is a chance for donors, alumni and supporters of the program to come out and see the team in action, as well as see how their contributions are helping,” Hollingsworth said.

Alumni had the opportunity to attend the inaugural Alumni Barbeque on Saturday night of the rodeo. While there, they enjoyed dinner, caught up with old friends and discussed upcoming OSU Rodeo news and events.

The Rodeo Team worked with Harvest II, the official Homecoming philanthropy by placing a food barrel at the rodeo. They also created a kids corral, which was a fun-filled game station for children to pin the tail on Bullet, rope a dummy and color a Homecoming coloring page.

“The support from the college, university and community for the rodeo has been great,” Hollingsworth said. “This annual family-friendly event brings people together to celebrate everything about Oklahoma State.”
